The Riviera del Brenta: a journey through aristocratic villas and rural scenery

A unique area lies between Venice and Padua, where mankind’s endeavours over the ages and the nature of a unique territory meet in true harmony: the Riviera del Brenta. This fascinating area has a system of river canals dating back to the 16th century that connect the Venetian lagoon to the hinterland, which were once exclusive passageways for the Venetian nobility to reach their magnificent country villas.

The Riviera del Brenta is now the perfect place to experience slow travel. Go by boat or bicycle, along the tranquil river, discovering historic villages, old mills and stunning Palladian architecture along the way in a truly poetic rural setting.

The Riviera del Brenta by boat and bike

Explore the breathtaking beauty of Riviera del Brenta by boat, and experience it as the Venetian nobles did, watching the landscape slip by from the unique perspective of the water. The tourist cruises that navigate the Brenta, such as the famous Burchiello, offer a fascinating journey among the villas, with the possibility of stops for guided tours. During the cruise, you’ll go through locks and swing bridges, deep in a landscape that, with the exception of cars, seems to have remained suspended in time.

If you prefer a more active trip, the Riviera del Brenta cycle path is a perfect alternative. The route follows the course of the river, taking you past historic villas and small villages, and you can always stop to visit attractions along the way. The route is flat and suitable for everyone, perfect for a day trip or a longer journey between Venice and Padua. For an even more complete experience, combine the two modes of travel: go by boat and come back by bike or vice versa!

Four Palladian Villas between Venice and Padua

The highlights along the Riviera del Brenta are the Venetian villas, sumptuous residences built between the 16th and 18th centuries for the Venetian nobility. These include the Palladian villas, masterpieces by Andrea Palladio and his followers, which add a unique beauty to the landscape.

The first villa of note is Villa Foscari ‘La Malcontenta’ in Malcontenta di Mira, an absolute gem designed by Andrea Palladio in 1559 and distinguished by the elegance of its impressive façade inspired by the temples of antiquity. Legend has it that the name ‘Malcontenta (discontented) comes from a lady of the Foscari family who was exiled here for being a libertine. The interior maintains its beautiful original frescoes inspired by mythology, while its gardens offer a wonderful view of the Brenta. The villa, still owned by the Foscari family, heirs of the Doges of Venice, can be visited by appointment.

Another property linked to the family is the Villa Widmann Rezzonico Foscari, also in Mira, which has an enchanting Rococo façade and interiors richly decorated with frescoes. Its surrounding park, graced with statues and centuries-old trees, is a perfect place for a romantic stroll. This museum is open to the public with guided tours available.

If you think you have already had your fill of splendour, think again, because next up is the Queen of the Venetian Villas. Villa Pisani in Stra is a palace on another level, an aristocratic residence of extraordinary beauty. Built in the 18th century, it is now home to an art museum and decorated with spectacular frescoes, including the marvellous room decorated with Jacopo Guarana’s Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne.

It boasts a monumental park, one of the most beautiful in Italy, with a hedge maze, tropical greenhouses and a spectacular reflecting pool. This villa is a National Museum and a visit takes almost half a day.

Although there are many more, the last villa on our list is the Villa Barchessa Valmarana, another villa located in Mira, famous for its frescoes from the School of Tiepolo and the barchessa with its Doric columns; a rural service building, typical of the Venetian villas, used for agricultural activities and now a venue that hosts events and tastings of typical products.

Villages, mills and picture perfect rural settings

In addition to the villas, the Riviera del Brenta is dotted with small historic villages, places where life goes at a slower pace. Dolo, for example, with its mills, is one of the most fascinating locations on the Riviera. the historic centre of this town is built around an old river port, with bridges and mills that speak of the agricultural tradition of the area. The old water mills are open to visitors and stand as a testament to the crucial role the River Brenta played in the local economy. One of these mills has been converted into a delightful wine bar called I Molini del Dolo that also offers a simple menu. Stroll along the Riva del Mulino, past colourful houses and other small taverns that serve Veneto’s specialities.

Mira is another village on the must-see list, with its numerous Venetian villas and peaceful, poetic atmosphere. Meander through its narrow streets to explore its stone bridges, small churches and enchanting views of the river. Stra, famous for Villa Pisani, is also an enchanting village, set in a delightful river landscape. The historical centre has elegant buildings and picturesque corners, but one of the most beautiful spots is the lock on the Naviglio del Brenta, where you can watch the boats pass through the system of locks that regulate the water level.

Whether by boat or by bike, exploring the River Brenta is an opportunity to enter a world of sumptuous villas, picturesque villages and the atmospheres of times past, where every corner has a story to discover.
